Once a patient has verified a surgeonĚs certifications, they can ask to see the surgeon's resume. This will provide information about where a plastic (cosmetic) surgeon has trained and if fellowship training was completed. Additional training after a residency is known as a fellowship, where expertise in a particular aspect of surgery is obtained. The resume should list the plastic (cosmetic) surgeon's membership in various local and national societies. Membership attests that the surgeon has met the ethical and practice standards set by the society. Membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) assures that the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has met the stringent ethical and practice requirements of the society.

The choice of an appropriate plastic surgeon must start with certification and qualifications. Patients must then become comfortable with the personality of a cosmetic surgeon and their staff. Patients should make sure all their questions are answered before undergoing a procedure.
