Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction: UAL

If you have excess subcutaneous fat that is resistant to diet and exercise or if you want to change the contours of your body then you may be a candidate for Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL).

In Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction, a specialized cannula is used which transmits ultrasound vibrations within the body. This vibration bursts the walls of the fat cells emulsifying or liquefying the fat, making it easier to suction out. Because fat cells alone are selected, blood and tissue loss is minimal. UAL may be a good option in places where the tissue is firm or fibrous, or when large amounts of fat are to be removed.

Advantages of Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction

  • In comparison to traditional liposuction where tissue destruction is necessary to manually break up the fat, UAL causes less tissue trauma and bruising. The ultrasonic waves liquefy the fat without damaging adjacent tissue
  • Smooth and even contouring is more achievable with UAL because it preserves skin retraction and contraction
  • UAL makes it easier to work on fibrous areas such as the such as the breasts, abdomen, or the back.
  • It is effective for removing larger volumes of fat in a single procedure.
  • There is slightly less blood loss
  • Patients report to have less postoperative pain
Possible Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and complications. In UAL, the ultrasonic energy applied has caused some undesirable side effects, including burns and other trauma on the skin.

Candidates for Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction

Just like any other form of liposuction, UAL should not be used as a means to lose weight. It is capable of producing better results in the re-sculpturing of the underlying fat cells to give a patient a more defined figure. The best candidates for UAL are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in particular areas. UAL candidates should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations.
